Tyler Rogoway, The Drive: US Navy Looking At Bringing Retired Carrier USS Kitty Hawk Out Of Mothballs

Bringing back its last operational conventionally powered supercarrier would help the Navy make its 12 carrier fleet goal a reality.

As the US Navy struggles to figure out how it can reach its new goal of a 355 ship fleet—up from 275 ships today—as quickly as possible, it has been looking towards extending the life of the ships it already has in service. WNU Editor: I guess it all comes down to cost, how effective will such a vessel be when it is modernised and refurbished, length of time necessary to modernise such a vessel .... and how long can it serve. So I say .... let us see the numbers.

  1. Alot will be learned, obviously, in the consideration of CV-63 re-entering service. I hope she does make it. It would symbolize VICTORY. We're still getting CVN-79, CVN-80, but that won't be for awhile. There's something special about a 2nd career, like BB-62 Battleship NJ, which had about 4 careers!!!! We'll probably need a few more oilers to keep Kitty Hawk topped off, and, that could mean more retired ships coming back, or, a new build Fleet Replenishment Ship or two, or three. PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED ON ANY NEWS. :)
